Hannah Kum

Ph.D., MFA

Academic & Research Position

Dr. Kum has been a faculty member or scholar at leading research campuses after graduating with an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London, UK, and a Ph.D. from Sungkyunkwan (SAMSUNG) University.

She is the Director of the New York-based M.I.N.D. Lab, and Associate Director of the university-based M.I.N.D. Labs international. 

Research & Publications

Dr. Kum's research and design areas include Interaction Design, Game Design, UI/UX Design, AR/VR Design, and Media system design. For example, she has designed: 

  • augmented reality systems for the interactive AR experience with Van Gogh’s studio

  • mobile AR games and navigation

  • interactive AR visualization of magnetic fields

  • augmented reality molecular visualization

  • 3D printer interface

  • and several others

Her research and designs are published and presented at SIGGRAPH, IEEE Human Robot Interaction, Euro XR, International Journal of Human Computer Interaction, Art Documents, and several other venues.

Dr. Kum has received awards for her university teaching. She regularly receives the highest teaching evaluations at her college (TOP 5%).

She is also among the highest at the university.

Dr. Kum’s interactive augmented reality designs have received top paper or exhibition awards in Europe and Asia. 

Dr. Kum's research and design work has been supported by grants or external projects from over 10 leading funding organizations, including:

Professional Design Experience

Beyond her academic research and design, Dr. Kum has also worked as a Creative Director and UI/UX Designer at leading computer and media companies such as Samsung, LG, and others. Her design experience spans more than 15 years. Most recently, Dr. Kum was a Lead User Experience Designer at the Singapore Design Centre, HP. (Hewlett- Packard Inc.), HP's single international design center. 

Design Projects 

Dr. Kum has UI/UX design projects and collaborations include: 

  • mobile game development, UI/UX design, character design for Korean president's election campus

  • 3D printers, interfaces, and user experience design with Hewlett-Packard 

  • VR brush design and testing with Google

  • Interactive exhibition, Video Mapping exhibition with Korea Telecom 

  • social presence research with Amazon

  • mobile gaming and transportation application development, UX design, and usability testing for Winter Olympic Organization, Korea

  • and several other high-tech companies

Her creative and design work has received awards and been featured in over 25 Solo and Group Design/Art Exhibitions spanning the globe: U.S.A., England, Italy, Spain, Korea, Australia, and Japan.
